28/01/26 Kestrels 1-1 ARU 1s
Match Report -
Kestrels 1 - 1 ARU 1s
Goal: Toby Stewart
Assist: Ryan Hoffman
After receiving mixed reviews about ARU’s ‘chirpy’ 1st team, who battered the Falcs, but lost to a Bedfordshire side that we dismantled before the Christmas break, the Kezzies were desperate to climb the table in what was bound to be a sweaty, hard-fought Cambridge derby. The mood was high in the changing room once Toby had been unofficially inducted into the Kestrel’s Hall of Fame and given the well deserved role of Vice Captain, but his work was not done yet.
At the opening of the first half we were sharp, zipping the ball around nicely through the back-line to the two no.10s, with the assurance that every loose ball would be immediately won back by Przemek, who commanded the midfield like a general. Struggling desperately to settle into the game, ARU conceded a few chances, but nothing clear-cut, until the pressure was too much to handle. Following a rash challenge from the oppo on Tayvon who kept pickpocketing their left back, Ryan stood over a free-kick at least 30 yards out. He nonchalantly chipped it in the danger area just in front of their shaky keeper, who (thanks to a loving nudge from Toby) fumbled the ball into the VC’s path for a stooped header into a practically open net. The shot of confidence we got from this goal led to yet more domination, but not quite enough composure to avoid slicing the opportunities that fell our way into the trees. With the help of a few crunching slide-tackles from Cam and TD, and Lucas standing on business when his offside call was criticised in the dying moments of the 45th minute, we went in with a narrow lead at the break.
Despite the gameplan of bagging early to put ourselves in the driving seat, the second half saw a drop off in possession and poise, while the ARU crowd on the sidelines were starting to make their voices heard - one of them with some derogatory remarks about Felix’s headband that should’ve had him banned from Queen’s pitches for life. Even with Fede orchestrating some threatening manoeuvres, the attacking force continued on like a shark with blunt teeth; they never seemed able to finish the job. At the other end of the pitch, though, the ARU striker forced Craig into an acrobatic double-save, which ended with a bundle and the ball in our net. However, the ref, whose heatmap barely left the centre circle, somehow identified the foul that ARU had committed within the kerfuffle and we held on to the 1-0 lead, but not for long. A quick throw-in and a through-ball opened up the Kestrels defence as an ARU winger poked the ball into the bottom right to equalise, leaving Abhi rightly disappointed and ready to make some changes. Jacob and Cephas injected the game with some intensity, but various flick-ons and half-chances were sadly never converted, often leaving the Kestrels vulnerable to counters. Luckily Josh, Alex and Lucas helped the boys sweep up and not throw away a more than deserved point, even though the ref in the middle of the park awarded some late offsides against us like a prime Stevie Wonder.
That was it. A draw wasn’t a bad result against 2nd in the league, but no-one was in doubt that we could and should’ve got more from the game. On to next week.
