22/10/25 Eagles 2-0 Oxford II

The first game in a new league marked the beginning of the Eagles’ campaign for back-to-back promotions. The team travelled to Oxf*rd with a mix of experienced and fresh faces, alongside their new coach, Carl Rowland. No one can deny that Carl truly exemplifies the one club spirit as he takes on coaching responsibilities for both the Eagles and Falcons this season. A speedy winger from Oxf*rd and a skilful number 10 promoted from their 3s, showed that Oxford have improved since March, and the first half was a battle. Still, as always, the Eagles were up to the challenge.

0-0 at half time mirrored last year’s Varsity’s game and it was time to put the new coach to the test. Clearly the speech was inspirational, as the Eagles came into the second half transformed. From then on, there was only one team in the game. Clever one touch passes through the midfield and up the line consistently left Oxf*rd on the back foot. After an injury at centre back, Sofia Mori dropped from CDM to partner Emma O’Donnell, and together they maintained a strong and composed defensive line (whenever the ball actually made it past halfway).

Early into the second half, after being instructed by Co-Captain Irene Bermudo Báguena to take more shots on the promise of chips if she scored, Praewa Taylor made it 1-0. A corner from Anna landed at her feet and she lifted the ball into the top right corner – a majestic finish that left the keeper with no chance. The Eagles’ second goal was a well-worked team effort. Fresher Evie Gooding’s clinical diagonal pass made it through the midfield to Anna Hipkiss on the left wing, who drove forwards and sent a cross across the goal line. Striker Eve was perfectly positioned to slide in at the back post - with her entire body following the ball into the net.

Shout outs to Rosie Ashton, whose debut was nothing short of wonderful as she battled Oxford’s winger tirelessly, and Sophie Woodhead who played through a chest infection and ended up in A&E.

What a set up for the coming year with a convincing win over the Other Place… and still, we have never seen a Furry score a goal.
